Gamma (g) - A measure of the steepness of the characteristic curve of a film or image and its contrast. It refers to the main slope of the curve, and is the tangent of the acute angle made between the straight-line portion of the curve and the base of the graph. Average emulsions averagely developed in a typical manner, have a gamma of about 0.8, high contrast films have a gamma greater than 1.0.
